JR Ranger Program Sessions

All sessions last 45 minutes.

The JR Rangers is an Intro to Skating and Intro to Hockey Program combination and follows the USA Hockey Learn 2 Skate and Learn 2 Play Hockey series of lessons, drills and on ice instruction.

Kids will be placed into groups based on their abilities as follows:

  • The Red Group will be the starting group for most kids as they learn to stand up, learn how to move around and begin to develop comfort and balance on the ice
  • The Blue Group is the next level and will consist of skaters who can stand up and move around on their own power but are still learning how to skate and stride. This group will focus on skating drills, games and lessons to improve and work on their skating edges, balance, coordination and strides
  • The Green Group is for JR Rangers who have advanced and earned their hockey stick and can demonstrate some skating competency and can now begin to learn basic hockey skills as well as continue to learn how to skate. In order to earn their hockey stick and advance to the green group a JR Rangers skater must EARN their hockey stick by skating across the ice using a skating stride and demonstrating good balance, control and competence.

Equipment & Jerseys

  • A limited supply of starter equipment sets are available for purchase for $50 and can be reserved during the forest lake hockey registration. Once registered, a week or so later you will receive an email voucher to bring to Strauss Skate in Maplewood to get your child fitted with an equipment set.
  • These sets do NOT include skates so you will need to provide your own.
  • Do NOT purchase a hockey stick….. these will be provided once the skater achieves basic skating competence.
  • **You must reside in the Forest Lake School District Boundaries to participate in our Junior Rangers Gear Program or have obtained a waiver to play hockey in the future with Forest Lake Hockey if your primary residence resides outside the school district boundaries**
  • Jersey and hockey socks are included for all players and will be given out at the first session
